My favorite take on the AACS revolt is today's GeekBrief:

Digg the Code

The Song is by Geoff Smith.

Have you ever bought a DVD and then got fed up with the annoying anti-piracy crap you have to suffer through every fucking time you turn on the DVD player? Here's a great graphic about that: piracy JPG

Apple iTunes DRM sucks

There's a free audiobook on iTunes right now, "Areas of my Expertise" read by John Hodgman. (John Hodgman is the guy who plays the PC in the Mac commercials.)

Great! I just listened to an interview with him and had thought about buying this book anyway. So off I go to download the audiobook. It's only available in the American iTunes store.

Yes, they have different versions of their store for different countries. I already knew that, because I had tried buying Battlestar Galactica episodes a couple months ago. It would have been the only legal way for me to watch these episodes without having to wait for the DVD release. But no, you need an American iTunes account to buy stuff at the American iTunes store. And for that, you need a US address and a US credit card. Both of which I do not have.

With the free audiobook, I assumed there wouldn't be a problem, since it's, you know, free. Just like free podcasts. But no: "Your account is only eligible for purchases in the German iTunes store."

And I can't even ask my American friends to download it for me, because the iTunes DRM will prevent it from working on my Mac.

Did I mention iTunes sucks?
