We had a chat the other day with another student who was adamant that being a Catholic (or a member of any other religion, for that matter) just means picking the best bits out of all the scripture and dogma and vile nonsense the pope sputters and making up your own version of it.
"It's not the church that defines belief, it's people!"
Why all those freethinkers still feel the need to join one of those religious clubs and proclaim themselves Catholics (or Lutherans, or whatever), she couldn't answer.
I'm not very eloquent when it comes to my deep felt hatred of all things religious, but
extempore is: how religion poisons everything

me: Hello?
caller: Franka.
(I don't know a Franka, nor does a Franka live here, so I assume it's someone who got the wrong number.)
me: I'm sorry, this ist *mylastname*. I think you have the wrong number.
caller: Oh, I guess you're right. I'm sorry!
me: That's no problem.
caller: So, can I talk to Michael then?
o.O

A rather complicated and difficult situation with a former friend of mine has led me to the following conclusion:
You can never be sure what someone's intent and motivation in a given situation is,
no matter how thoroughly you analyse that situation,
no matter how well you know this person and
no matter how much you think you know about people, relationships, and social interactions in general.
( click here for examples and more of my rambling )
Conclusion: You'll just never know.
Why am I writing all this? I'm trying to formulate a coherent argument that I could present to the earlier mentioned ex-friend (though I doubt we'll ever talk about this). It would go something like this:
Even though you think you know me so well, and even though you think you know everything there is to know about people and their relationships, you'll never know why I did all these things I allegedly did to hurt you.
The sad thing is: I've learned through experience that there is no way this person is going to listen to rational arguments. He simply twists and turns everything you say or do until it fits his line of reasoning, which invariably ends with him blaming others for everything that goes wrong in his life. In the end, you can either just sit there and quietly take his abuse, or stop listening to him altogether.
